What is AI Document Filing?
AI document filing is an automated process that moves documents into folders based on how they've been categorized. Revver's Smart Filing AI agent performs this function on documents after Smart Extract AI assigns a metadata field to them letting it know where they belong. Another Revver AI agent called Smart Classification lets you determine how each document should be categorized, whether it's a contract, HR form, invoice, work order, or any other document type. Then Smart Filing sends each document to the folder that corresponds to its category.

Smart Filing moves documents to the proper folder by the metadata that's attached to them. You can set it up to run as soon as Smart Extract AI adds the metadata field set by Smart Classification. Just map each of those metadata fields to specific folders and watch as Smart Filing does the work for you.

What happens to documents that Smart Filing can't file automatically?
Don't worry. Those documents aren't lost or glossed over. Smart Filing routes them to a manual review folder, from which you can determine where they belong. Reviewing these exceptions can also help you identify new document categories or improve your [Smart Classification](https://www.revverdocs.com/smart-classification/) instructions, reducing the number of documents that require manual review in the future.
Does Smart Filing require Smart Classification?
No. Smart Filing can use an existing dropdown metadata field to determine where a document belongs. Map each option in that field to the appropriate folder, and Smart Filing will automatically move documents according to the metadata assigned to them. Smart Classification and [Smart Extract AI](https://www.revverdocs.com/smart-extract-ai/) can automate more of this process by identifying the document type and adding the applicable metadata before Smart Filing takes over.
What is the difference between Smart Filing and a Revver workflow?
Both can automatically move documents, but Smart Filing gives you a simpler way to automate filing without building a workflow. You map metadata options to their corresponding folders, and Smart Filing handles the routing. [Workflows are better suited](https://www.revverdocs.com/document-workflow-automation/) for processes involving additional steps such as approvals, notifications, eSignatures, or other business actions. The two can also work together: Smart Filing puts the document where it belongs, and its arrival might trigger a workflow.
Can Smart Filing send different types of documents to different folders?
Yes. You can map metadata options to a variety of destinations. For example, invoices could go to an Accounts Payable folder, contracts to a Contracts folder, and onboarding forms to an Employee Records folder. Once the metadata is added, Smart Filing uses that information to determine where each document should go.
